Will You Remember Me?

Like so many authors, I read all the time. I have a book with me wherever I go whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or the vet’s office. Nothing passes time like hanging out with some good friends or at least … a hawt hero or two.

You see, it’s not the surprising twisting plot or the amazing world the author creates that keeps me turning the pages (though that is certainly important). It’s the people in the story and their journey that propels me from chapter to chapter. I’m all about the character driven stories. Of course I love to read romance. I make no bones about it. I enjoy all subgenres of romance from dark paranormals to action packed science fiction to cozy mysteries. But no matter where I find myself in time, contemporary or historical, I want to fall in love even as the hero and heroine are falling in love. I want to laugh and cry and ache for the characters as life throws one hardship after another at them.

I’ve loved many books, but there are some characters I’ve thought about long after I finished the book. Meggie, from the Thornbirds (Colleen McCullough), Ayla and Jondalar from the Earth’s Children series (Jean M. Auel), Zainal from the Freedoms series (Anne McCaffrey) and more recently, those sexy vampires from the Black Dagger Brotherhood (JR Ward), to name just a few. They just left a mark on me that I couldn’t seem to shake even after the author offered me their happy endings.

All writers want to create those kinds of characters. The ones that haunt your dreams and sneak up on you while you’re doing the dishes, random thoughts bumping over your synapses and making you smile or better yet … sigh. And I’m no exception.

My newest romantic thriller, IN HIS EYES, has a cast of characters I hope worm their way into your heart (and psyche) and keep you up late at night turning the pages.

Do you have any favorite characters that have stayed with you?

It’s always wonderful to be noticed … or is it?

To those around her, Maggie Callaghan appears to have the perfect life…a handsome husband, three beautiful children, and her own business. But beneath her thin veneer lies a dark past and self-doubts. When evidence of her husband’s infidelity surfaces, Maggie leases a cottage on the Maine coast and prepares for her inevitable divorce. But a serial killer is on the hunt—and he’s marked Maggie as his next victim. Now her beachside retreat is the focus of an undercover FBI investigation targeting the murderer who’s left a trail of bodies across two states. As lies and secrets are revealed, Maggie realizes her life depends on knowing who’s protecting her—and who’s got her in his sights.

He shouldn’t be doing this. Rainmaker knew it and continued to berate himself even as he pulled open the heavy door to the dingy bar. The run-down establishments in the Old Port section of Portland, Maine were a hell of a long way down the chain from the upscale waterfront bars he frequented when he was home in Boston. But then killers of prostitutes didn’t seek out victims in lavish establishments. Well, that was his argument, anyway…and until some other theory felt right, he was sticking to it.

Inside, the conditions were even more dismal than the other two bars he’d already checked out. Both light and fresh air had given up on the joint. Hopelessness oozed from the exposed wooden beams and clung to the patrons in a dank fog that hunched their shoulders and slowed their movements.

He slid across the cracked vinyl of a booth in the back corner, strategically located so the front door, the bar, and the Friday night crowd were all visible. He ordered drinks from a woman with a tray in her hand and the troubles of her life furrowing her brow. Not even her bright lipstick and plastic smile could disguise the despair clinging to her like the silk shirt she’d squeezed into. He hoped the dark blotch on her right tit was a tattoo and not her lover’s attempt at seduction.

Scanning the tables, he located the raven-haired woman he’d been tailing for the last hour. The wedding band on her finger hadn’t stopped the guy at the last bar from hitting on her. She’d flirted with him for over half an hour before slipping out the back and leaving the poor schlep with a boner and the check.

The leather skirt brushing her creamy thighs as she’d skulked into the night and the three-inch stilettos clicking a rapid staccato against the cobblestones screamed hooker, but the expensive handbag and classy makeup said something else entirely. He hoped uncovering her secrets would also unearth a killer who apparently had an affinity for women with black hair.

As the woman sipped some girly martini, Rainmaker wondered again why he couldn’t let go of a case the Bureau didn’t believe existed. People died every day. Crimes, unfortunately, went unsolved. And only foolhardy FBI agents went on sabbatical to bring down a serial killer with no connected murders.

Yeah, he was an idiot, working hard to ruin his career.
