His Billion Dollar Baby

Dom versus Top by Lynda Bailey

I want to thank the Bitches for letting me hang out today. It’s a great day to be a bitch, ain’t it? 😉

When I first started reading BDSM romances, I didn’t realize there was any discernible difference between a “Dominant” and a “Top.” A Dom is a Dom is a Dom. Right?

Uh, wrong.

Turns out there’s a HUGE difference between the two. If you’re a “Dominant” in your professional life—think hard-working corporate CEO or brilliant brain surgeon—you’re the one in the driver’s seat. The one in charge. The Big Cheese. The Bosi. The Head Honcho. Period. No discussion. So in my vanilla mind, that also made you the “boss” in the bedroom. This presumption was further encouraged because most of the Dom/sub stories I read contained the dynamic of Boss Man and Assistant (aka submissive) female.

But as I delved deeper into the kink lifestyle for my upcoming BDSM series, I saw the error of my thinking. When you’re the “Top” in the boardroom, you might be more inclined to want to be the “bottom” in the bedroom. Say what? Yup. Total role reversal. Though this probably shouldn’t come as a surprise. I mean we’ve all seen the TV shows where Lady Dominatrix has her dungeon and employs only female Tops to punish all the male doctors and lawyers and politicians for their naughty behavior. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. However, that role reversal hasn’t found its way into too many BDSM romances—at least not in the books that I’ve read…which have been considerable. J

It’s still standard to have the hero be the complete Alpha both in and out of the bedroom with the female the willing submissive. Now I’m not knocking the authors who have used this D/s relationship, but think how much more interesting 50 Shades would have been had Christian been the submissive…. Just sayin’…

And it’s not about making the woman the Top. It’s about making the boss the bottom. I’ve read in several non-fiction kinkster books that letting go of responsibility, of having decisions made for you instead of always making them, can be the epitome of release. And not just sexually (though I’m sure that’s the case) but on an emotional level as well.

That’s why for my next book, Shattered Trust, I wanted to play with this turnaround so the employee was the Top and the employer the bottom. I don’t have a cover for Shattered Trust yet (scheduled release date is sometime this summer) but I’ve shared a picture of Liam, my hero and Top, along with the blurb and a sexy excerpt. I’d love to come back and do a cover reveal with you Bitches!

Thanks for hosting me today!

Learning to love is the easy part…

As a young woman, Kate Landry trusted the wrong man, and she paid dearly for her naiveté. Alone, pregnant and destitute, she survived by the sheer force of her will. Now forty-two, Kate has made a good living for herself and her daughter as the owner of the Bluebird. But she’s forgotten how to live. That is until he comes into her bar…

Liam Underhill loved a girl once. And only once. After an accident paralyzed her, she didn’t trust he would continue to love her. Brokenhearted, Liam left and soon discovered a world where women did trust him—to be their sexual Dominant. He plays out the scenes masterfully, but the unexpected request from the stoic bar owner will pose his greatest challenge yet…

Kate and Liam embark on a journey to uncover repressed urges and, in the process, they discover new desires. They also fall in love with one another. But when you’ve been shattered as badly as they have by mistrust, deceit and abuse, loving is easy. Trusting is harder, if not impossible, especially when the heart is involved…

Shattered Trust is a BDSM romance. It contains explicit language and graphic love scenes, including bondage, domination, spanking, whipping and multiple partners. It is intended for mature readers only.

“All right! Goddamn it.” Liam chucked off the covers and stomped to the door, clan only in his boxers. “Someone had better be fucking dead,” he muttered.

He yanked open the door, and froze. The last person he expected to see was the woman who’d fired him less than eight hours earlier.

Kate’s eyes bugged from her scarlet red face. Her gaze darted down to his morning wood tenting the cotton material of his drawers then zoomed back up to again meet his. She chirped like a startled chipmunk, whipped around and stared at the sky.

His masochistic side would enjoy exploiting her discomfort—especially in light of her sacking him—but he personally wasn’t an exhibitionist. He reached over, snagged his jeans from off the chair and shoved in his legs. He zipped up, not an easy task given his Johnson had stiffened at the sight of the woman at his door, and obstinately kept the button undone. He faced Kate again, only she was still staring at the wispy clouds with her back to him.

“It’s safe,” he informed her.

She glanced over her shoulder, her gaze wandering over his bare chest. Her nostrils flared, not much, but he still noticed it.

Kate then stared down at the cracked asphalt. “Don’t you think you should put on a shirt?”

Liam didn’t know whether to laugh or slam the door. She wakes his ass up at this ungodly hour then acts like a prissy bitch? He tamped down his anger and hooked his thumbs in his belt loops. “Nope. I’m fine.”

Her nose wrinkled like she’d smelled something rotten.

“Is there something I can help you?” he prodded.

She turned fully toward him. “I…uh…wanted to talk to you.”

Her face had lost the blazing red, but was still a rosy pink. She stared hard into his eyes. He had to wonder if that was to keep from looking…lower. To test the theory, he flexed his pectoral muscles and smirked to himself when the color in her cheeks deepened. “Okay. Talk.”

Why we love a kick ass heroine…by Nina Croft

I occasionally go back and read one of the books I loved when I was younger, and honestly, some of the heroines are positively feeble. They tended to be young, ravishingly beautiful, innocent, and in desperate need of some man to come along and save them. The closest they got to kick ass was feisty. Give me a heroine like that these days, and I’d probably throw the book across the room (or more likely delete it from my kindle).

No, these days, I like a good strong, kick ass heroine. By that I don’t mean they always have to be ready to literally shoot down anyone who stands in their way (though I must admit I’m partial to the shooter types), but they must be able to deal with the crap life throws them without relying on someone else to sort things out.

Here’s a few of the reasons why I think we love a kick ass heroine:

  • When I read a book, especially a romance, I want to identify with the heroine. When I was little (a long time ago) I wanted to grow up to be an assassin, or a spy or an explorer… well you get the picture. So it stands to reason that I identify with tough women (even if in reality I turned out a bit of a wimp).
  • And I want to fall in love with the hero. How can I fall in love with a man I don’t respect, and how can I respect a man who falls in love with a wimp, even if she is beautiful!
  • I want the heroine to be worthy of the hero. If I can’t have him then it’s because some great woman who truly deserves him has captured his heart, not some whiny, too stupid to live, beautiful young thing, who has absolutely no clue how to shoot a pistol and protect her man.
  • Long gone is the time when we were happy to wait for some man to come along and save us, or the world. These days, if there’s anything at all out there in need of saving, then we want to be the ones to do it.
  • And finally, I love the moment when a really tough heroine shows her vulnerable side, the side that only the hero gets to see, and only after he’s proved he’s worthy.

When I was plotting my contemporary series, Babysitting a Billionaire, I wanted to write about strong kick ass women. So I decided to write a series about women who work as bodyguards and spend their days keeping their men safe. Not that the men involved are always appreciative, but it’s great to see an alpha male struggling to accept that his woman is strong enough to protect him. Here’s Dani from my latest release, Out of Control, showing just how kick-ass she can be…

“You don’t think I’m strong enough? You don’t think I could take you?” She took a step toward him and poked him in the chest. Hard.

He unfolded his arms and straightened away from the desk. She wanted a fight? Maybe he should give her one. “No. I don’t think a woman can take a man. The size is too different.” He cast his eyes down her tiny figure and drawled, “You’re too small.”

Her eyes narrowed to slits. Then she spun around and high-kicked him in the chest. He went to the floor with a crash and lay staring up at the ceiling.

Shit. That hurt, and not just his male pride.

It felt as though he’d been hit by a truck.

He turned his head as she came to stand beside him, then toed him in the chest with one sneaker-clad foot.

“So? Still think a woman can’t take a man?”

Who are your favorite kick ass heroines, and why do you love them?

sexual tension in paranormal romance by lisa kessler

Thanks for having me on the blog today! =)

I thought we could chat about the sexual tension in paranormal romance, that push and pull between characters that makes you ache to turn that page and read the next chapter because you want them to get together so badly. I think paranormal romance raises the tension up a notch when the couple is often not even of the same species.

NightChild-500pxI experience that same adrenaline rush when I’m writing the books, and Night Child was no exception. Issa was an ancient Night Walker, protector of the mortal world. He thought of himself as above mortals or at least separate from us, but Muriah kept digging, trying to find out who “he” really was, and as Issa rediscovered who that was, he found himself attracted to her.

Muriah’s father abandoned her and her mother when she was a small child so she’s got some severe commitment issues, but once Issa has decided he might risk caring for her, he refuses to dive in if she won’t take that same risk and offer her heart to him.

This constant push and pull was so fun to write. Here’s a little taste. =)

Muriah approached him with a new pair of khakis and a couple of T-shirts. “I guessed at the size so you might want to go try these on first.”

He took the clothes and slid his arm around her waist, maneuvering her toward the fitting room.

“Hey, I didn’t sign on to be your dresser.” She grumbled, but didn’t struggle.

He pulled the door closed and turned to meet her eyes. “It’s light in here and full of people. Apep will not be able to surprise us, and his serpents cannot spy. We need to talk.”

He stripped off the wet shirt, exposing his chiseled torso. She did her best not to choke on her tongue. His tanned skin and taut muscles tempted her, luring her to touch him. Turning around to give him privacy seemed like the right thing to do, but there wasn’t a hint of modesty in this Mayan god, and if he could handle getting this personal, then she could, too.

When he unzipped the wet pants, she held her breath. Would an ancient guy wear underwear? She was about to find out. He bent over to lower the wet slacks. When he straightened up, she realized he’d been talking, but she didn’t have a clue what he had said. Instead, all her attention was focused on a fine trail of dark hair leading from just below his navel and disappearing under the low-slung elastic band of his boxer briefs.

Her gaze snapped up to meet his. Thank the universe he couldn’t read her thoughts. “Yeah?”

“Did you hear my question?”

He stood two feet from her in only his underwear, and he thought she was listening? He was either completely unaware of his sex appeal, or he was way too accustomed to being obeyed.

Probably both.

She cleared her throat. “I must’ve missed it.”

A spark lit his eyes that told her he might have more than a clue to his sex appeal.

He picked up the T-shirt and pulled it on. “I asked if you knew of another hotel closer to the airport so we can get out of New York as soon as the sun sets tomorrow.”

“I’m sure I can find one.” She pulled out her phone, grateful to have something to pretend to focus on besides him tucking his package into the new khakis she pulled off the rack for him.

“I probably should’ve grabbed some dry underwear, too.”

“They are nearly dry now. I will be fine.” He popped the tags off, and she glanced up from her hotel search. “They’re not going to like you taking the tags off before you pay.”

The corner of his mouth curved up. “They will be honored to take my money.”

She groaned and rolled her eyes. “Do you ever not get your way?”

He stepped closer to her, his chest an inch from hers until her back pressed against the modular wall of the fitting room. “Rarely.” His dark gaze held hers, and the deep rumble of his voice sent heat through her body. “But some things are worth the extra effort.”

I hope you enjoyed the excerpt! So what is your favorite part of paranormal romance?
