Author Interview and Stolen Desire by Barbara Donlon Bradley

What inspired you to write your first book? Do you have a specific writing style? How did you come up with the title?

I was reading a lot of time-travels at the time and found that all the heroines either were historians, history teachers, worked in a museum, that kind of thing, or loved the place they would end up time-traveling to and knew too much about the timeline. I got tired of that so created a heroine who knew nothing about the time line she was going to. She was an astrophysicist.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you? Why?

Meryl Streep. I’m not sure if it is true anymore but I was told when I was in college that I resembled her. I never saw it, but she’s a great actress so I would be honored to have her portray my life.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?

Funny and just a little bit weird.

When did you starting writing erotic fiction?

It was my fourth book. To be honest I have always written explicit scenes, but never considered writing erotic. It took a critique partner reading that book to make me realize I had the ability to write erotic.

Erica Jong says she loves the word cunt and wishes she could “rehabilitate” the word and make it beautiful again. Do you feel the same way about some of the words you use in your stories?

When I was a teenager we lived near New Orleans and I had a so called friend’s father call me that. Ever since that I have hated the word. It’s used to demine women. I feel the same way with pussy. I don’t use them in my writing and I don’t think Erica could soften that word for me.

Why did you start writing erotic/erotic romance fiction?

Because of my characters. I write character driven books and they set the heat level for me. In fact my first erotic was just a love story to me. It took a critique partner to make me see it was erotic.

Talk about the first erotic story you wrote.

I honestly didn’t know I had written an erotic story. I thought I had written another SF/Futuristic with Star’s Destiny. This one was a little different for me because I had written it for a particular publisher. I set a schedule to get it done so I could submit it. The story line and plot had my hero and heroine alone together pretty early. He was the last of his race until he met her. She had the same genes and the man who controlled her had been enhancing that gene. My hero pretended to be part of a traveling show because he wanted to get close to Carnis so he could kill him. When he found he couldn’t he stole the man’s bride. He wasn’t aware of her DNA until after he took her. I never wrote the purple type prose anyway, but like I said in an earlier question that there are certain words I’d never use.

A critique partner read through it and asked me if it was erotic. Of course I said no. I don’t use the words I had seen in erotic’s. She was the one who told me to think about it. The book had a sensuality about it and at least one of the love scenes wasn’t in the bedroom. (it’s been a while since I wrote it so some of the scenes are a little fuzzy).

Can anyone write erotic fiction?

I don’t think so. Some authors shy away from the idea of writing love scenes. I know a few who shut down when they try to write them. It’s just not part of their style.

How did you learn to write good sex?

Not real sure but I’ve always written explicit love scenes. My first book isn’t an erotic, but have three sex scenes in it. When I learned that my husband’s grand aunt, who was in her 80’s at the time had read my book all I could think about was oh my God she read the love scenes!

Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?

I am still working hard on my Vespian Way series. Phaze bought the eight book in the series, Hidden Desire and I’m waiting for the edits on that. I’m editing the ninth book in the series, Timeless Desire and have started writing the tenth on in the series.

I do have a few other things going on, working on a couple short stories for Melange Books and will be dusting off an older ms about werewolves after the holidays.

Where can readers stalk…um…I mean, find you?

I’m everywhere…

Heather sighed as she opened her eyes and stretched. Before she could move she felt a warm hand on her breast.

“I see you’re awake.” Storm’s breath brushed against her cheek.

She looked up at her mate, who had a knowing smile on his face. “And I see you are awake too.” She was referring to the erection pressed against her hip.

“True, but I can’t help it when I have such a wonderful partner lying beside me.” Storm nibbled against her throat. “We still have time before we need to be anywhere.”

“Why didn’t you wake me earlier?” She smiled as he settled himself between her thighs. “You could have had all the time you want if you had.”

“Because the twins aren’t allowing you to get enough sleep yet. I don’t mind watching you sleep when I know you need it. It gives me time to appreciate having you in my life.” He dipped his head to her mark. “And waking you up this way is an anticipation I look forward to. I don’t mind stretching that out a little.”

“Because you know what will happen when I wake.”

“That is the best part.”

She felt him smile against her neck as he pulled the soft tissue of her mark into his mouth before he worked his way down her body.

“You are incorrigible.”

“And that is why I’m your heart.” His tongue lathed her nipple before drawing the tip into his mouth. She arched up against him and he slipped his hands under her.

A growl escaped him when they were interrupted by the computer system. “Heather, you have a communiqué from Admiral Barrister.”

She sighed again. This time in frustration. What did he want now?

“The last time he contacted us you ended up being whipped.” Storm blew against the tip before he climbed back up her body. “I’m inclined to not let you answer him.”

“Storm, I’m still part of Earth’s security.” She looked up at him, his face only inches above hers. “I can’t ignore him.”
